Martyn Joseph

Thursday, 9th November 2017

Juxtaposition is a key theme in Martyn’s work.
The simplicity and the complexity of the human condition and all that it encompasses is underpinned with a heady promise of hope.
There is a versatility to Martyn’s music that is hard to categorise. Many have tried, resulting in labels such as Folk, Rock, Soul, Folk Funk and Americana; all of which somehow miss the mark.
But sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, and stories, and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman.

Keith James : The Songs of Nick Drake

Thursday, 16th November 2017

This concert begins with an introductory set of timeless songs by brilliant songwriters – all contemporary with Nick Drake:  Richard Thompson, Roy Harper, Sandy Denny, Al Stewart, Vashti Bunyan, John Martyn, Bridget St John and Bert Jansch.
Also featured are two poems by William Blake which Keith has set to guitar arrangements based on Nick’s unique style.
Nick Drake is the most revered and loved of all this country’s singer/songwriters. He recorded three cherished Albums between 1969 and 1972 but was almost entirely unknown in his day. After his tragic death in 1974, aged only 26, his music almost disappeared into obscurity.

Jim Moray

Saturday, 18th November 2017

For fifteen years Jim Moray has been at the forefront of a new movement in English traditional music. His debut album Sweet England changed the sound of Folk and won a brace of awards for its innovative melding of orchestration and electronica. Subsequent albums embraced everything from grime to Johnny Marr-esque guitar pop, but at their heart was Jim’s unmistakeable soulful and yearning voice; singing old songs in a new way.
His latest album Upcetera heralds a new chapter, receiving the best reviews of his career, including five stars from Mojo, fRoots and R2 magazines. He has also found the time to contribute three new songs to BBC Dr Who spin-off show Class, and launched his own Low Culture Podcast.

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner

Saturday, 25th November 2017

His departure from folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span has enabled fiddle player Peter Knight to turn his full attention to his trio Gigspanner. In the process he has established their reputation as one of the most genuinely ground-breaking forces on the British folk scene.
Gigspanner has introduced a whole new audience to the extraordinary musicianship of Peter Knight, a violinist whom many consider to be in a league of his own.
One of our most popular acts at Calstock Arts, their 2017 visit celebrates the launch of their brand new studio album, The Wife of Urban Law. Peter is joined by Roger Flack on guitar and Sacha Trochet on percussion, both powerful and intelligent musicians in their own right.
Doors and bar 7.00pm, start time 8.00pm

Flats and Sharps

Saturday, 2nd December 2017

2017 has been another big year for young Cornish outfit Flats and Sharps: a hit debut album, nationwide sell out shows and a packed festival schedule including Australia, U.S.A, Ireland and mainland Europe. The band continue to gain new fans wherever they play.
Hailing from Penzance, in the South West of England, Flats and Sharps blur the lines between Bluegrass, Folk, Country & Pop, performing their own highly original songs as well as their renditions of Bluegrass classics. These five incredible young musicians have honed their skills in 400 live performances over five years, charming and wowing audiences along the way.
Flats and Sharps have come a long way from their humble beginning busking in Penzance as 17 year-olds to performing on the Town Square stage at the Country 2 Country Festival at the O2 in London, at Proms in Hyde Park, London which was recorded for later broadcast on the Bob Harris Country show on BBC Radio 2. Along the way that have played for (and with) the Governor of Kentucky (who jumped on stage to play with them), won fans at scores of festivals including Isle of Wight, Isle of Man, Maverick, Ireland’s Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival and many Bluegrass and Folk Festivals in Europe
Flats and Sharps are ones to watch out for, five talented young men who make friends wherever they play.
